Rain and cooler weather to arrive from Sunday

Weather conditions in Greece are expected to change gradually from Sunday, bringing cooler temperatures and increased rainfall, particularly in northern and northwestern areas.

Autumn approaches

Meteorologist and former National Meteorological Service director Thodoris Kolydas said the shift had already been indicated by weather trends at the beginning of September.

Summer is not handing over the keys yet, but autumn is beginning to knock on the door,” Kolydas said in a social media post.

He said temperatures will begin to fall from Sunday, while rainfall will increase mainly across northern and northwestern Greece.

The change is not expected to mark the definitive end of summer, with warmer conditions likely to persist in parts of the country.

Showers and storms today

On Thursday, Sept. 10, showers and thunderstorms are expected mainly in mountainous areas, particularly along the Pindus mountain range, according to Meteo.gr.

Most of the country will otherwise see sunny conditions with scattered clouds. Cloud cover is expected to increase over mainland areas around midday, bringing localized showers and thunderstorms.

Temperatures will reach 31-34°C in Macedonia and Thrace, 34-36°C in Thessaly and up to 35°C in parts of the rest of the country.

Winds ease in Aegean

Northern to northwestern winds in the Aegean are expected to reach 4-5 Beaufort, while western northwesterly winds of similar strength will prevail in the southern seas.

Winds in the Ionian will mainly be from western directions at 3-4 Beaufort.

In Athens, temperatures are expected to reach 33-34°C, while Thessaloniki will see highs of around 30-31°C.

The cooler and wetter conditions expected from Sunday will mark a gradual transition toward more autumnal weather, particularly in northern Greece.
