Retired General Frangos slams Defense Minister Dendias over plans to disband 1st Army
Former Hellenic Army Chief Frangoulis Frangos has sharply criticized Greek Defense Minister Nikos Dendias over reported plans to restructure the armed forces, including the possible dissolution of the 1st Army.
Quoting an article by political scientist and former Defense Ministry Director General for National Defense Policy Dr. Konstantinos P. Balomenos, Frangos posted on social media:
“The Armed Forces are not a playground for anyone’s self-promotion, nor a place for dangerous experiments. You cannot shut down the 1st Army. It is one of the European Union’s five main headquarters, and such a decision would be unacceptable when a European Army is being formed.”
Frangos dismissed claims that closing the 1st Army would save working hours as “ridiculous,” questioning who would command operations in Thrace and the Aegean. He called altering operational plans without testing them “a great irresponsibility.”
He also criticized the renaming of the 3rd Army Corps, 4th Army Corps, and Aegean Islands Defense Command, asking sarcastically, “Who taught you this? The incompetent people around you? In the army, we know each other—go play ‘Playmobil’ somewhere else.”
Frangos’ remarks have sparked significant reactions both nationwide and within defense circles.
