Greece expands drone capabilities as Defense Minister Dendias highlights “New Era” strategy

Nikos Dendias has announced significant progress in Greece’s domestic drone production, describing the country’s evolving defense capabilities as part of a broader transition into a “new era” of military technology.

Dendias made the remarks following a visit on April 8 to the 306th Telecommunications Base Factory in Acharnes (Menidi), where he inspected ongoing work on unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) production and advanced manufacturing systems.

Focus on Domestic UAV Production and Advanced Technologies
During the visit, the Defense Minister reviewed the installation of drone production stations and the integration of 3D printing technologies into military manufacturing processes.

According to Dendias, these developments are central to modernizing the Hellenic Armed Forces and reducing reliance on foreign defense suppliers.

“New Era” Strategy Gains Momentum
In a statement shared on social media, Dendias noted that this was his second visit to the facility and expressed satisfaction with the progress made in strengthening Greece’s indigenous UAV production capacity.

He emphasized that the “New Era” strategy extends beyond Acharnes, pointing to parallel efforts underway at the 316th Regional Technical Workshop in İskeçe.

Modernizing Military Infrastructure
Greek defense authorities aim to transform traditional maintenance and repair facilities into high-tech production hubs capable of manufacturing unmanned systems and spare parts using additive manufacturing techniques.

This shift is expected to significantly accelerate production timelines while enhancing operational readiness.

Strategic Importance of Unmanned Systems
Dendias underlined that these initiatives are designed to meet the demands of modern warfare, where unmanned systems play an increasingly critical role.

He added that the expansion of drone capabilities—particularly in border regions and technical units—demonstrates Greece’s growing emphasis on technological innovation within its defense strategy.
