Retired air force officer arrested over massive illegal weapons cache

Greek police have arrested a retired Hellenic Air Force officer after uncovering an extensive cache of illegal firearms and ammunition at his home in Kiato, a town in southern Greece. The raid, conducted by the Organized Crime Division, revealed more than 100 firearms and thousands of rounds of ammunition, authorities confirmed.

According tovima, the officer’s wife was also detained as part of the ongoing investigation, which is exploring the couple’s potential involvement in a major illegal arms operation.

Suspected links to arms trafficker

Initial reports suggest the retired officer may have connections to a well-known arms trafficker. Investigators are probing whether the weapons were intended for resale or were part of a wider trafficking network. According to sources close to the case, the suspect was allegedly involved in ammunition reloading, an activity subject to strict legal controls in Greece.

Although police have yet to release a detailed list of the weapons seized, officials described the collection as extensive, diverse, and professionally maintained, raising alarm over its potential use.

Ongoing investigation raises security concerns

The arrests mark a major breakthrough in the country’s battle against illegal arms trafficking. Authorities continue to investigate whether the arsenal is connected to criminal networks or terrorist groups.

Given the size and sophistication of the weapons cache, officials have voiced concern over the national security implications of such an operation going undetected.

The couple is expected to face multiple felony charges, including illegal possession of firearms, ammunition trafficking, and possible violations of national security laws.

Further updates are expected as the investigation develops.
