Pharmacist remanded in €400,000 fake prescription scam
A 34-year-old pharmacist accused of leading a criminal organization that issued thousands of fraudulent prescriptions — causing losses exceeding €400,000 to Greece’s national health provider EOPYY — has been remanded in custody following his testimony before an investigating magistrate.
His 29-year-old wife, a medical doctor, was released under restrictive conditions after giving her own testimony regarding her alleged involvement in the scheme, according to Kathimerini.
According to the case file, the criminal ring — which reportedly included several doctors, some of them specialists — illegally selected social insurance numbers (AMKAs) and used them to issue fake prescriptions. These prescriptions were then recorded as filled at the pharmacist’s pharmacy, and the resulting pharmaceuticals were resold on the market.
Authorities uncovered the operation during a large-scale investigation spanning the regions of Attica, Fthiotida and Pieria. Further developments in the case are expected as the inquiry continues.
