EOPYY uncovers €12 million prescription fraud scheme

Greek health insurance authority EOPYY is conducting extensive investigations into a large-scale prescription fraud scheme estimated to have caused losses of around €12 million. According to data presented by the agency’s Directorate of Pharmaceuticals, 32 doctors and 62 pharmacies have been implicated, with financial penalties already imposed.

The issue was examined during an internal meeting held on November 6 at EOPYY headquarters, the findings of which became publicly known yesterday.

According to the Directorate of Pharmaceuticals, October’s compliance inspections revealed significant irregularities. The investigation found damages totaling approximately €12 million, leading to fines amounting to €98,500 against the involved healthcare professionals and businesses.

EOPYY also announced that further inspections are underway. These include cases involving 10 doctors and 80 pharmacies linked to three criminal case files submitted by the Financial Police, which the agency has recently received for review.

Authorities are continuing their efforts to address systemic fraud and strengthen oversight within the national healthcare system.
