Two arrested over fake surgery scam in Rodopi

Two people were arrested in Şapçı (Sapes), Rodopi, for allegedly attempting to defraud a resident using a fake medical emergency, police said.

According to authorities, the victim received a phone call from a person posing as a doctor. The caller claimed that a relative had been involved in a traffic accident and urgently needed surgery.

The caller then demanded money and jewelry to cover the supposed medical costs.

Police launched an operation after the victim reported the attempted scam. Officers spotted the two suspects arriving by car near the victim's home.

They intervened as one of the suspects was collecting a bag containing money and jewelry and arrested both individuals.

Police said a third person, whose identity is not yet known, is also believed to have been involved.

In a separate case in Gümülcine (Komotini), police arrested a Bulgarian national wanted under a European arrest warrant issued by Bulgarian authorities.

He is wanted in connection with an alleged escape from a prison facility in Bulgaria.

All those arrested are expected to appear before Greek judicial authorities for further legal proceedings.
