SYRIZA–Progressive Alliance has accused the government of Kyriakos Mitsotakis of presiding over a record surge in fraud and corruption investigations in Greece in 2025.
SYRIZA slams Mitsotakis government over ‘Record’ EU Fraud Probes in 2025

In a statement citing the annual report of the European Public Prosecutor’s Office, the party said 175 cases involving Greece are currently under investigation, with an estimated €2.68 billion in damages. Of those, 117 cases were opened in 2025 alone — a sharp rise compared to 53 ongoing investigations in 2023.

SYRIZA claimed many of the cases were uncovered through complaints by private individuals or EU bodies rather than Greek authorities, arguing this undermines the government’s narrative of denying or shifting responsibility.

The opposition party also alleged that senior ruling party officials are implicated in scandals involving misuse of national and EU funds, direct contract awards and policies favoring banking, fuel and food cartels. It referenced the recent OPEKEPE case as a major example.

Concluding its statement, SYRIZA said public tolerance is running out and called for a “progressive political change,” urging left-wing and progressive forces to take the lead.
