Government rejects inquiry into OPEKEPE EU farm subsidy case
The government will reject opposition requests to launch a preliminary investigation into ministers Spilios Livanos and Fotini Arabatzi over the OPEKEPE EU farm subsidy case, spokesman Pavlos Marinakis said, citing a lack of evidence.
No evidence or indications of wrongdoing, says government
Marinakis said a review of the case file found “no facts and not even indications” that would justify an inquiry, adding that the government’s response will be negative.
Opposition accuses government of cover-up
Opposition parties accused the government of blocking justice and attempting to cover up the scandal. PASOK, SYRIZA, New Left and the Communist Party all criticized the decision, alleging political responsibility and lack of transparency.
Government defends position and rejects criminalization claims
Officials said the move aims to stop the “criminalization of political life,” arguing that opposition parties are using the case for political purposes and exaggeration.
Dispute over ministerial responsibility rules
The government also stressed that constitutional rules on ministerial responsibility should not be confused with procedures for lifting parliamentary immunity.
