Resignation reflects government effort to reset amid political pressure
Officials said Lazaridis’ departure was driven by renewed scrutiny over his 2007 appointment as a scientific adviser despite lacking the required qualifications, an issue that resurfaced alongside the broader OPEKEPE agricultural subsidy case.
Senior lawmaker Dora Bakoyannis had publicly called for his resignation, arguing that his continued presence was harming both the government and himself.
In his resignation statement, Lazaridis said he had defended himself “with arguments and political dignity,” noting the controversy dated back nearly two decades.
The resignation comes as the government faces mounting pressure over the evolving OPEKEPE case and an inconclusive parliamentary debate. Internal polling reportedly suggests 65–70% public disapproval, adding further strain ahead of elections expected within a year.
Ruling party New Democracy is increasingly relying on its core voter base while seeking to avoid internal divisions. Government officials have opted to pause disciplinary action against lawmakers linked to the case, awaiting conclusions from the European Public Prosecutor’s Office.
Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has defended cooperation with European investigators while criticizing aspects of the handling of the case. He has also pledged new legislation to speed up judicial review procedures involving members of parliament.
