Resignations in the Navy brought the economic problems experienced by the personnel to the agenda
In an interview with a news website focusing on military issues, a non-commissioned officer serving in the Greek navy, who did not wish to be named, stated that the navy personnel were experiencing serious economic problems.
Stating that the crew of a ship decided to resign from duty without permission from their superiors after realising that they would work without pay for 2 months, the petty officer also stated that a group of crew members from the frigate YDRA, which was planned to go to the Red Sea, also resigned.
"The problem is not just going to the Red Sea. The real problem is that they are not respected. Crew on merchant ships earn more and it has become more attractive to work on these ships."
Underlining that the frigates belonging to the Greek navy also have technical problems, the petty officer said that especially the YDRA cannot last for six months on a mission.
The non-commissioned officer stated that before knowing how many people would resign, they wanted to make a show with the ships.
In an interview with a news website, Vice Admiral Ioannis Drimusis, former Chief of the Greek General Staff, emphasised that due to the old age of the ships, many of their systems were not working properly and as a result, they became dysfunctional or partially functional.
