Greek Navy conducts guided missile live-fire exercise in the Ionian Sea
The Hellenic Navy carried out a guided missile live-fire exercise in the southern Ionian Sea, involving multiple naval and air force units as part of a coordinated operational training activity, according to an official statement from Greece’s Ministry of Defence.
The drill, conducted on Tuesday, June 23, 2026, took place in open waters off the southern Ionian region and included participation from frigates, fast attack craft, patrol vessels, special naval operations units, naval aviation helicopters, and elements of the Hellenic Air Force.
Senior military officials observed the exercise, including Chief of the Hellenic National Defence General Staff General Dimitrios Choupis, Navy Chief Vice Admiral Dimitrios-Eleftherios Kataras, and Fleet Commander Vice Admiral Christos Sasiakos.
According to the Defence Ministry, the exercise involved complex operational scenarios designed to test a range of guided missile systems in the navy’s arsenal. The ministry stated that two designated targets were successfully struck and neutralized during the live-fire drills.
Officials said the exercise formed part of the Navy’s annual operational training program, aimed at enhancing combat readiness, evaluating personnel performance, and validating the operational reliability of naval weapons systems in real conditions.
