The deployment marks a routine NATO mission visit amid ongoing regional maritime cooperation efforts.

Official Visit to Piraeus Turkish Martyrs’ Cemetery

During the port call, the ship’s commanding officer, Navy Lieutenant Commander Alper Pabuççu, along with crew members and Turkish military attachés stationed in Athens, visited the Piraeus Turkish Martyrs' Cemetery.

A brief ceremony was held in memory of Ottoman soldiers who lost their lives during the Balkan Wars, World War I and the Turkish War of Independence. The event included a moment of silence, the Turkish national anthem and the laying of red and white carnations at the graves.

Among those attending were Türkiye’s Ambassador to Athens Çağatay Erciyes and Consul General in Athens-Piraeus Işıl Işık Civelik, who later visited the vessel and signed the ship’s commemorative logbook.

Advanced Mine Countermeasure Capabilities

Commissioned between 2005 and 2008, TCG Anamur is one of six Aydın-class minehunter vessels serving in the Turkish Navy. Designed by Germany’s Lürssen shipyard and constructed at Istanbul Naval Shipyard, the vessel is considered among NATO’s most modern mine countermeasure platforms.

Built with non-magnetic steel to counter magnetic-triggered mines, the ship is equipped with advanced sonar systems capable of detecting mines at distances of 400–600 meters. Its 360-degree maneuverability allows it to navigate safely through minefields and neutralize identified threats.

Strategic and Diplomatic Context

The port visit underscores ongoing NATO operational coordination in the Eastern Mediterranean, even as broader diplomatic dynamics between Greece and Türkiye continue to evolve.

Military-to-military engagement under NATO frameworks remains a key stabilizing mechanism in the region.
