PASOK MEP Papandreu condemns far-right group’s participation in Independence Day parade
PASOK Member of the European Parliament Nikos Papandreu has strongly criticized the participation of a far-right group in the military parade held on October 28 to commemorate Greek Independence Day.
In a written statement, Papandreu identified the group as the “Greek Orthodox Youth” (Elliniki Orthodoksi Neolea), noting that it is “known for its anti-democratic and anti-constitutional rhetoric.”
The PASOK politician highlighted that the organization has previously praised the leaders of the April 21 military junta, insulted democratic parties with derogatory labels, and left wreaths bearing symbols of hatred and division. He also pointed out that members of the group covered their faces and posed in a manner reminiscent of the attack units of the neo-Nazi “Golden Dawn.”
Papandreu called on Defense Minister Nikos Dendias to investigate how the group was allowed to participate and to identify those responsible. He also urged Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis to “take the necessary measures to protect the country’s constitutional institutions and initiate legal reforms to prevent such incidents from recurring.”
Emphasizing that Independence Day parades should be “dedicated to volunteerism and solidarity rather than extreme ideological propaganda,” Papandreu said it was “unacceptable” for such displays to occur, particularly in front of children attending the event.
