PASOK raises alarm over severe delays at Kipi (Bahçeköy) border crossing
Greece’s main opposition party has criticized the government over prolonged waiting times and congestion at the Kipi (Bahçeköy) border crossing, warning that the situation could escalate further ahead of the peak summer travel season.
The regional branch of PASOK in Meriç said delays at the key Greece–Türkiye land border point have reached “critical levels,” with waiting times reportedly exceeding several hours.
Long Delays at Key EU External Border
According to the party’s statement, travelers at the Kipi crossing have faced delays of 5 to 6 hours on a regular basis, with queues extending for kilometers during peak periods.
During major holiday periods, including recent Eid celebrations, some travelers reportedly experienced delays exceeding 8 hours due to increased cross-border traffic from Türkiye
The Kipi crossing is one of the most important entry points between Greece and Türkiye, handling significant volumes of passenger and commercial traffic.
EU Digital Border System Adds Pressure
PASOK attributed part of the congestion to the recent rollout of the European Union’s Entry/Exit System (EES), which requires biometric data collection and digital registration of third-country nationals entering and exiting the Schengen Area.
The system, introduced in May, is designed to strengthen border security but has increased processing times during initial implementation, particularly at infrastructure-limited border posts.
Infrastructure and Staffing Concerns
The opposition party argued that the crisis is being driven by inadequate infrastructure, insufficient lanes, and staffing shortages at the border facility.
PASOK warned that without immediate intervention, the situation could damage Greece’s international image and negatively affect tourism and economic activity in the Meriç region.
The party also stressed that Kipi is a strategic gateway between Asia and Europe, making its efficient operation critical for both national and EU-level mobility flows.
Call for Immediate Government Action
The Evros branch of PASOK accused the government of failing to respond effectively to mounting pressure at the border crossing, urging urgent measures to reduce waiting times.
It called for accelerated modernization of infrastructure, improved staffing levels, and expanded capacity at the facility.
PASOK also urged authorities to explore EU-level financial and technical support to upgrade border management systems and prevent further congestion during the upcoming peak travel season.
As summer approaches, concerns are growing that increased travel demand could further strain one of Greece’s busiest external border crossings.
