The President of the Hellenic Parliament, Nikitas Kaklamanis, has announced the reinstatement of the Parliament’s Special Committee on Demographic Issues. The announcement was made during his address at the “Demographics and Greece in 2040” forum, organized by the newspaper Eleftheros Typos.

Kaklamanis stated that official data reveal an uncomfortable truth about Greece’s population trends. The country’s population has declined from 11.2 million in 2005 to 10.4 million in 2020, and continues to decrease. Projections estimate a population of 9.03 million in 2050, potentially dropping to 6.3 million by the end of the century, which he described as a “deeply dystopian but realistic scenario.”

He emphasized that the factors contributing to this negative development extend beyond low birth rates — which have resulted in an exceptionally low fertility rate of 1.3. The aging population and economic conditions that discourage family formation or drive outward migration also play significant roles.

Regarding the national effort to address the demographic challenge, Kaklamanis argued that “with the right measures, we can curb our downward trend in the coming decades. This, in itself, is a vital act of responsibility and respect toward future generations.” He added pointedly: “No one is expendable in this national effort.”

The event also featured speeches by:

  • Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis
  • Minister of National Economy and Finance Kyriakos Pierrakakis
  • Minister of Development Takis Theodorikakos
  • Minister of Family and Social Cohesion Domna Michailidou
  • Minister of Health Adonis Georgiadis
