The new Traffic Code (KOK) entered into effect today (Saturday, September 13). Its goal is to reduce traffic accidents and raise driver awareness of road safety.
New traffic code comes into force

In the first stage, digital cameras have been activated in the Attica region. Detected violations will be directly notified to drivers through the gov.gr platform.

MAIN PENALTIES

According to the new law, the main penalties are as follows:

  • Mobile phone use: €350 fine and 1-month license suspension for the first violation. On repeat offenses, the fine rises to €2,000 and license suspension for 1 year.
  • Speeding: Fines starting from €700. Drivers engaged in racing face €8,000 fines and 4-year license suspension.
  • Drunk driving: Fines range from €350 to €4,000. Readings above 1.1‰ carry prison terms. In severe accidents, penalties include 10-year license suspension and up to 20 years in prison.
  • Seatbelts and helmets: Fines apply to both drivers and passengers. Repeated violations can lead to 1-year license suspension.
  • Running red lights and STOP signs: Fines between €350–€2,000. If a STOP violation causes an accident, penalties may include up to 8 years of license suspension and long prison sentences.
  • Driving without a license: €1,000 fine and up to 2 years in prison. Repeat offenses increase fines to €4,000 and 8-year license suspension.
  • Parking in disabled spaces: First offense €150. Repeat offenses €2,000 and 1-year license suspension.
  • Blocking public transport lanes: €350 fine and 70-day license suspension.
  • Blocking railway crossings: First offense €1,200 fine and up to 5 years in prison. Repeat offenses can lead to 20 years in prison or even life imprisonment.

Under the new regulations, penalties increase sharply for repeat violations. In addition to monetary fines, long-term license suspensions and heavy prison sentences are introduced.
