Mitsotakis to meet Erdogan in Ankara on February 11
Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis will visit Ankara on February 11 to attend the 6th meeting of the Greece-Turkiye High-Level Cooperation Council (HLCC) and hold talks with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Greek government sources and the Turkish presidency confirmed on Thursday.
During the visit, Mitsotakis aims to preserve and strengthen channels of communication and maintain a stable, functional relationship with Türkiye amid global uncertainty. While there is no agreement yet to address Greece’s sole dispute with Türkiye—the delimitation of the continental shelf and Exclusive Economic Zone in the Aegean and eastern Mediterranean—Athens hopes for constructive dialogue and a calm bilateral atmosphere.
Officials noted that the improved relations over the past 2½ years have led to a reduction in airspace violations, better migration cooperation, eased short-stay visas for Turkish citizens on 12 Aegean islands, and strengthened trade.
Mitsotakis said in an interview with Foreign Policy that, despite the longstanding maritime dispute, Greece and Türkiye can maintain a “constructive relationship on certain fronts” and build on diplomatic progress achieved in recent years.
The HLCC meeting will include relevant ministers and is expected to cover all aspects of bilateral relations, regional developments, and the signing of agreements to further enhance cooperation.
