US, Greece discuss bilateral relations and global security issues
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Greek Foreign Minister Giorgios Gerapetritis held a high-level phone call Wednesday to review bilateral relations and discuss regional and global security issues.
The two diplomats emphasized the importance of continued cooperation between Washington and Athens, particularly in the Eastern Mediterranean.
Rubio described Greece as a “stalwart NATO ally” and reaffirmed the strength of the US-Greek relationship across several sectors, according to State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott.
Cooperation across key sectors
The discussions covered cooperation in defense, energy, technology and law enforcement, with both sides highlighting the strategic importance of their partnership.
The Greek Foreign Ministry said the call underscored the “longstanding depth of strategic relations” between the two countries and Greece’s role as a “regional pillar of peace and stability.”
Regional and global security
Rubio and Gerapetritis also exchanged views on the latest developments in the Middle East, as well as the ongoing wars in Ukraine and Iran.
The discussions come as Washington and Athens continue to strengthen coordination on security and other strategic issues in the Eastern Mediterranean and beyond.
