Marginal 0.03 pct decline in Greece's population in 2024
A further - albeit marginal - decline of 0.03% was recorded in Greece's permanent population, which is estimated to be 10,372,335 people as of January 1 of this year (5,094,094 men and 5,278,241 women), compared with the population on January 1, 2024, which has been revised to 10,375,764 people, the Hellenic Statistical Authority announced on Thursday.
According to ELSTAT, this development is the result of the natural decrease in the population, which amounted to 57,564 people (68,309 births versus 125,873 deaths of individuals residing within Greek territory), and net migration, which is estimated at 54,135 people (a positive balance).
The population aged 0-14 years accounted for 12.8% of the total population, compared with 63.5% for those aged 15-64 years, and 23.7% for those aged 65 years and over. The aging index (population aged 65 and over relative to the population aged 0-14) stood at 185.4.
At the same time, net migration in 2024 (54,135 people) corresponds to the difference between 132,149 immigrants and 78,014 emigrants. For 2023, net migration has been revised to 29,816 people (116,591 immigrants and 86,775 emigrants). It is noted that the figures for incoming migration also include individuals who were in the country under international or temporary protection status.
