Live births in Greece edge up in first quarter of 2026, ELSTAT says
A total of 15,946 live births were recorded in Greece during the first quarter of 2026, up slightly from 15,889 in the same period a year earlier, according to data released by the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT).
The figure represents an increase of 57 births, or 0.4%, compared with the first quarter of 2025.
Of the babies born during the January-March period, 8,184 were boys and 7,762 were girls.
Stillbirths decline
ELSTAT recorded 96 stillbirths during the first quarter of 2026, down 3% from 99 in the corresponding period of 2025.
On a monthly basis, live births increased by 2.6% in January and 1.2% in March compared with the same months a year earlier, while February recorded a 2.9% decline.
More births to Greek mothers
According to the data, the ratio of live births to Greek mothers compared with foreign mothers rose to 9.5 to one during the first quarter of 2026, from 8.9 to one in the same period of 2025.
Regional trends
The number of live births increased in seven of Greece's 13 administrative regions.
The largest increases in absolute terms were recorded in Thessaly, the Peloponnese and Central Macedonia, where births rose by 62, 56 and 31, respectively.
The biggest declines were registered in Central Greece, Attica and the Ionian Islands, where the number of live births fell by 81, 32 and 31, respectively.
