Greek households spent an average of €1,820 per month in 2025, ELSTAT says

The survey, based on a sample of 5,540 private households across Greece, found that average annual household expenditure reached €21,842.40 in 2025, up 5.5% from €20,694.48 in 2024.

The increase was more limited after adjusting for inflation. At constant 2024 prices, average annual household expenditure rose by 2.9%, or €611.93, while the Consumer Price Index increased by 2.59% in 2025.

Housing and food account for major share of household budgets
Housing costs represented a significant portion of household spending, particularly for households living in rented accommodation. These households allocated an average of 23.4% of their monthly expenditure to housing, with rent accounting for 17.3%.

The distribution of spending also varied considerably by household income position. The lowest-spending 20% of households devoted 54.4% of their total expenditure to food and housing, compared with 34.5% among the highest-spending 20%.

Half of all households spent more than €1,414.60 per month in 2025.

Significant regional differences
Average household expenditure varied substantially across Greece.

The highest annual average was recorded in the Attica Region, at €24,981.36, while the lowest was recorded in Central Greece (Sterea Ellada), at €16,475.52.

Households in urban areas spent an average of €1,892.86 per month, compared with €1,386.11 for households in rural areas. Rural households therefore recorded average monthly expenditure 26.8% lower than their urban counterparts.

Spending remains below 2008 level
Despite the increase recorded in recent years, average household expenditure in 2025 remained 12.0% below its 2008 level. It was also 4.7% lower than in 2010.

Compared with 2020, when household expenditure reached its lowest level, average spending increased by 39.0%.

Household spending also varied according to household composition and the age and employment status of the household head. Households consisting of a couple with two children aged up to 16 spent an average equivalent to 149.8% of the national monthly household expenditure, while single-person households headed by someone aged 65 or over spent 45.6%.

The highest average spending by age group was recorded among households whose head was aged 35–44, at 133.3% of the national average. Households headed by people aged 75 and over recorded the lowest relative level, at 55.6%.
