Eurostat: Fuel prices rise 16% in Greece
Fuel and lubricant prices for private transport rose sharply across the European Union over the past year, with Greece recording a 16% increase between August 2025 and August 2026, according to Eurostat data released Wednesday.
Across the EU, prices increased by an average of 23.8% over the same period. Prices were higher in 26 of the 27 EU member states, with Malta excluded from the comparison because of its regulated pricing system.
Diesel prices jump 6.4% in Greece
Greece recorded a 6.4% increase in diesel prices between July and August 2026, one of the smaller monthly increases in the EU.
The largest increases were recorded in Czechia, at 14.3%, followed by Bulgaria at 13.5% and Luxembourg at 12.3%. Italy recorded a 5.2% increase, Romania 6.1%, the Netherlands 6.2% and Denmark 6.3%.
Petrol prices in Greece rose by 1.9% between July and August.
Across the EU, petrol prices increased in 22 countries during the month, while prices fell in three and remained unchanged in two.
Greece starts from higher price levels
The annual increase in Greece came on top of fuel prices that were already relatively high compared with the EU average.
Data from fuel-prices.eu show that on August 10, the average petrol price in Greece stood at €1.980 per litre, compared with an EU average of €1.790. Diesel was priced at €1.986 per litre in Greece, compared with €1.928 across the EU.
By September 14, the Greek petrol price had reached €2.158 per litre, while diesel stood at €2.122. The corresponding EU averages were €1.924 and €2.075 per litre.
Bulgaria records biggest annual increase
The largest annual increase in fuel and lubricant prices was recorded in Bulgaria, at 34.5%, followed by Lithuania at 28.8%, Finland at 27.6%, Germany at 27.5% and France at 27.4%.
The smallest increases were recorded in Hungary, at 1.3%, Sweden at 6.1% and Ireland at 11.7%.
Eurostat data also show that diesel prices across the EU had already increased by 4.3% in July compared with June, while petrol prices rose by 4.7%.
The latest figures indicate that fuel prices continued to rise across most of Europe through August, with Greece recording another significant increase despite its monthly petrol rise remaining below that seen in several other EU countries.
