UK to rejoin Erasmus programme in 2027

The United Kingdom will rejoin the European Union’s Erasmus student exchange programme on Jan. 1, 2027, allowing British students and young people to access study, training and work experience opportunities across the bloc.

Foreign Office Minister Hamish Falconer confirmed the timeline in Parliament on Tuesday, announcing that applications will open in November ahead of the programme’s resumption.

The agreement marks Britain’s return to the EU-backed education initiative after its participation ended following Brexit.

Programme extends beyond university students

Falconer stressed that Erasmus opportunities would not be limited to undergraduate university students but would also cover a broader range of educational institutions and training programmes.

Participants will be able to study, undertake vocational training and gain work experience in EU countries through the scheme.

The minister also urged lawmakers to work with the British Council to encourage educational institutions to participate in the programme.

Return follows post-Brexit withdrawal

The UK’s participation in Erasmus ended in December 2020, following the government’s decision not to continue in the programme under its post-Brexit arrangements with the EU.

Britain formally left the bloc on Jan. 31, 2020, after the 2016 referendum in which a majority of voters backed leaving the European Union.

The return to Erasmus in January 2027 will restore access to the exchange scheme for British participants, with applications scheduled to open two months before the programme resumes.
