Investigation over €750,000 Thessaloniki police deficit

Police officers are being called to testify before an investigating magistrate regarding a financial deficit exceeding 750,000 euros discovered in Thessaloniki police services.

The scandal came to light following the October 2022 suicide of a deputy police officer who had managed the Security Department’s finances for years.

According to sources, the missing funds were intended for emergency operational expenses, including travel allowances for police personnel during transfers or assignments. The money appears to have been diverted into cryptocurrency investments and gambling.

Those summoned to testify include administrators from various police departments in Greece’s second largest city who informally provided financial resources to the deceased officer, helping him cover his department’s treasury needs. Also called is a person who exercised supervisory duties over financial services.

The criminal investigation file is based on conclusions from an administrative audit and concerns charges including false certification and breach of duty.
