A new law aimed at protecting children and young people has made ID verification mandatory for the purchase of tobacco and alcoholic products in Greece. As of this week, customers at retail outlets and kiosks must either present official identification or use the “Kids Wallet” app to verify their age before buying such items.

The law applies to all in-person retail sales, including at convenience stores and kiosks. However, it does not currently cover online or phone orders, drawing criticism from some observers who argue that it leaves a significant loophole in enforcement.

Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis defended the legislation, stating that its core goal is to “seriously restrict children’s access to tobacco and alcohol.”

The new regulation goes beyond traditional cigarettes and alcoholic beverages. It also includes heated tobacco products, nicotine-delivery devices, and other next-generation smoking alternatives.

Despite concerns about online enforcement, the law is seen as a step toward tightening public health controls and curbing underage substance use in Greece.
