Greece intensifies nationwide checks on alcohol sales to minors

Greek authorities are stepping up nationwide inspections targeting the entry of minors into nightclubs and bars, as well as the sale of alcohol and tobacco products to underage customers.

The Panhellenic Association of Restaurants, Cafés, Tourism Businesses and Related Professions has urged businesses to pay close attention to their legal obligations, warning that violations can result in significant fines, prison sentences and temporary or permanent closure.

Businesses required to comply with new controls
According to the association, all restaurants, entertainment venues, hotels and related businesses that sell alcohol are required to register on the alto.gov.gr platform.

Businesses must also be able to present a digital document confirming their registration during inspections. The document is generated following the business’s registration on the platform.

The association highlighted several key requirements:

• Minors are prohibited from entering nightclubs and establishments operating exclusively as bars.
• The sale of tobacco products to minors is prohibited.
• The sale of alcohol to minors is prohibited at any licensed food and beverage establishment.
• Minors are prohibited from working in nightclubs, clubs and similar entertainment venues.
• Business owners must verify a customer’s age using an identity document or other valid proof before allowing entry where age restrictions apply.
• Fines of up to €10,000 and possible prison sentences
• Businesses found violating the regulations can face fines ranging from €500 to €10,000, as well as prison sentences of up to three years.

The association also warns that an establishment’s operating license can be suspended for five days following a violation.

For a second violation, the suspension can reportedly increase to 20 days, while a third violation can result in the establishment being permanently closed.

The nationwide enforcement campaign involves several authorities, including:

• National Transparency Authority
• Municipal Police
• Tourist Police

The professional association has called on businesses to exercise particular caution and ensure full compliance with the legislation amid the intensified inspections.
