Domestic violence reports fall 12% in Greece, minister says
Reported incidents of domestic violence in Greece have fallen 12% in 2026, a decline that may reflect the impact of measures introduced in recent years, Citizen Protection Minister Michalis Chrisochoidis said on Tuesday.
Speaking to SKAI television, Chrisochoidis said authorities recorded around 6,500 domestic violence reports during the first four months of the year and carried out 3,850 arrests. Some of those arrested have already been placed in pretrial detention.
“This decrease means that something is working. Some perpetrators have obviously become afraid,” he said.
Government expands traffic enforcement
Chrisochoidis also highlighted the rollout of new traffic camera systems being installed at key locations across the Athens metropolitan area by the Ministry of Digital Governance.
He described the initiative as the start of a new era in traffic enforcement, with violations to be detected and processed automatically through camera-based monitoring systems.
New restrictions planned for e-scooters
The minister said the government will soon introduce new regulations for electric scooters, including a ban on their use by minors.
Additional measures aimed at reducing accidents involving both minors and pedestrians are also being prepared. Under the planned rules, electric scooters will be required to carry third-party liability insurance to cover compensation claims arising from accidents.
The measures form part of broader efforts to improve public safety and address growing concerns over road accidents involving micromobility vehicles.
