Greece reports alarming rise in domestic violence: Up to 120 cases reported daily

Greece is facing a growing domestic violence crisis, with authorities recording between 100 and 120 incidents reported daily, according to Michalis Chrysochoidis, the country’s Minister of Citizen Protection.

Speaking at the Delphi Economic Forum, the minister highlighted the scale of the issue, placing domestic abuse and public safety back at the center of national debate.

19,500 Cases Referred to Justice System
Official data from 2025 underscores the severity of the situation:

  • 19,500 cases were brought before the courts
  • Over 1,300 victims required hospital treatment
  • Approximately 1,600 individuals were placed in protective shelters
  • More than 30,000 incidents were reported overall
  • Over 5,000 women used the emergency “panic button” safety application

“These figures reflect a deeply concerning social reality,” Chrysochoidis said, stressing the need for sustained institutional response.

Slight Decline in 2026 Linked to Tougher Enforcement
The minister noted a 15% decrease in cases in 2026, attributing the drop to stricter enforcement and visible punishment of offenders. Around 500 perpetrators are currently in prison, he added, reinforcing the message that “there are now real consequences.”

School Violence and Bullying Remain Challenges
Beyond domestic abuse, authorities are also grappling with rising violence and bullying in schools. While digital reporting platforms have been introduced to encourage students and teachers to report incidents, officials acknowledged ongoing legal and procedural challenges in handling cases involving minors.

Organized Crime and Public Safety Measures
Chrysochoidis also addressed broader security concerns:

  • Cigarette smuggling and electronic fraud remain key organized crime issues
  • Greek police were described as among Europe’s most effective forces in tackling these threats
  • The “Ariadni” security program in public transport will become permanent, deploying hundreds of officers daily
  • Stricter Traffic Enforcement and Smart Surveillance
  • Authorities are intensifying road safety efforts, conducting tens of thousands of alcohol checks each weekend. Fatal traffic accidents reportedly declined in 2025.

Plans are also underway to expand the use of smart surveillance cameras in Athens and nationwide.

Persistent Social Concern
Despite these measures, domestic violence and youth-related violence continue to generate serious concern within Greek society, signaling that deeper structural and cultural challenges remain.
