Daughter of femicide victim urges stronger protections at European Parliament

The daughter of a woman killed in a domestic violence attack in Greece addressed the European Parliament on Thursday, calling for stronger protection mechanisms and better support for children affected by femicide.

Jessica (Stefania) Danai, 20, whose mother Enkeleida was stabbed to death in May 2024 in Menidi, western Athens, spoke at an event co-organised by SYRIZA MEP Kostas Arvanitis and non-profit organisation Gine Anthropos.

“Today I am here not only for my mother, but for all the children left behind,” Danai said, referring to children whose mothers were killed as a result of gender-based violence.

She said her mother had repeatedly reported threats to authorities but did not receive adequate protection. Danai stressed that complaints without proper risk assessment, clear information and immediate safeguards fail to prevent deadly outcomes.

“It is not possible for a woman to keep asking for help and for the system to wait until the worst happens,” she said.

Danai called on European institutions to introduce uniform risk assessment procedures, ensure immediate protection in cases of repeated threats, guarantee transparent information for victims during legal proceedings and provide systematic support for children affected by femicide.
