New Democracy offices targeted in attacks across Athens
Two New Democracy offices in Athens were targeted in separate attacks on September 27, with windows broken and paint thrown at one party office and paint used to damage the political office of former minister Andreas Loverdos in another incident.
The attacks targeted the governing New Democracy party's local organization in Kypseli and Loverdos' political office in Dafni. The incidents were reported amid a series of attacks against New Democracy offices and affiliated political figures in the Attica region.
ATTACKS TARGET PARTY OFFICE AND LOVERDOS OFFICE
According to reports in the Greek media, the New Democracy office in Kypseli was targeted by unidentified individuals on September 27. The attackers reportedly broke the building's windows and threw paint at the entrance.
Later the same day, the political office of New Democracy member and former minister Andreas Loverdos in Dafni was also targeted with paint.
Loverdos shared photographs of the damage on social media and said he was not afraid or intimidated by the attack. He described the incident as an act of violence and said he would continue his political activities.
NEW DEMOCRACY CONDEMNS ATTACKS
New Democracy condemned the attacks and called on other political parties to denounce similar incidents.
In its statement, the governing party described the incidents as acts of political violence and intimidation, stressing that, in its words, “our democracy cannot be terrorized.”
The party's response followed a series of attacks against New Democracy-linked offices in Attica.
THIRD ATTACK REPORTED IN 24 HOURS
Greek media also reported a third incident within roughly 24 hours, targeting the political office of Nikos Papathanasis, Deputy Minister of National Economy and Finance, in Marousi.
Reports said paint was thrown at the exterior of Papathanasis' office, adding another New Democracy-linked location to the incidents recorded in Kypseli and Dafni.
Authorities had not publicly identified those responsible in the reports reviewed.
