Greece expands €300 monthly childcare support to student mothers
Greece has expanded its “Nannies of the Neighborhood” program to include university students who are mothers, providing eligible women with up to €300 per month in childcare support.
The initiative is designed to help mothers balance higher education and childcare by allowing them to hire a registered caregiver while continuing their studies.
Under the “Nannies of the Neighborhood” program, known in Greek as “Νταντάδες της Γειτονιάς,” women university students with children can receive a monthly payment of €300 to help cover childcare costs.
The measure aims to reduce one of the main barriers facing student mothers by giving them access to childcare while they attend classes and pursue their education.
Up to €500 available for working parents
The childcare program also provides financial support to working parents, with the amount depending on their employment status.
Parents working full-time or as self-employed professionals can receive up to €500 per month, while those working part-time or on a rotating schedule are eligible for up to €300.
Registered unemployed mothers can also receive €300 per month for up to three months. The support is intended to give them greater flexibility to attend job interviews and search for employment.
Childcare available from 2 months to 2.5 years
The program covers children from the age of two months up to two and a half years.
Childcare can take place either at the family’s home or at the caregiver’s residence, providing families with flexibility in choosing an arrangement that suits their circumstances.
Caregivers participating in the program must meet a number of eligibility and safety requirements. These include providing a criminal record certificate, health documentation and completing first-aid training specifically related to infants and young children.
The Greek government is continuing the program nationwide as part of its efforts to support families and facilitate women’s participation in education and employment.
