DYPA: €880 monthly allowance for nine months for new mothers

Greece’s Public Employment Service (DYPA) has launched a new digital service through the platform parentalbenefits.dypa.gov.gr, providing special financial support to mothers who are self-employed, freelancers, or working in the agricultural sector. The new allowance amounts to €880 per month for nine months, offering a total benefit of €7,920, marking a significant innovation in social policy.

The allowance is available to all mothers engaged in non-salaried occupations. A key requirement is that applicants must have previously received the maternity or childbirth allowance from e-EFKA and must have all insurance contributions settled.

Eligible beneficiaries also include adoptive mothers, intended mothers in cases of surrogacy, and mothers who are part of same-sex couples—ensuring equal access for all family structures.

The monthly benefit corresponds to the national minimum wage, set at €880, and is paid for a duration of nine months. The first payment is issued the month following the online application, ensuring swift financial support for new mothers.

A major advantage of the allowance is that it is tax-free, non-seizable, and non-transferable, with no deductions on behalf of the state or e-EFKA, guaranteeing that recipients receive the full amount.

Applications for the €880 allowance must be submitted exclusively online through the DYPA platform. Applicants must have already completed the procedure for receiving the maternity or childbirth allowance from e-EFKA.

A critical requirement is that the application must be filed within two months from the payment of the initial allowance. Applicants must also be registered in the DYPA system using their TAXISnet credentials and AMKA number and must have full insurance clearance with no outstanding debts.

The new regulation allows for up to seven of the nine months of the allowance to be transferred to the father. The mother must, however, receive the first two months. The same option applies to same-sex couples through a joint declaration submitted to e-EFKA.

The right to the €880 allowance is permanently forfeited in specific cases, particularly when the two-month application deadline is not met or when the applicant lacks valid insurance clearance at the time of submission.

Funding for the allowance comes from DYPA’s special account for self-employed and freelance workers, while benefits for women employed in the agricultural sector are covered by the state budget. This dual funding mechanism ensures the programme’s sustainability and the uninterrupted payment of benefits.
