Greek police respond to 410 domestic violence cases in one week

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE RESPONSE INTENSIFIES
Greek police services dealt with 410 incidents of domestic violence during the week of April 28 to May 4, 2025, according to a weekly report released by the Hellenic Police (ELAS). A key part of the force’s strategy against domestic violence involved the activation of specialized Domestic Violence Response Units, which handled the majority of reported cases. Authorities responded to 652 emergency calls during the week, while the “Panic Button” safety feature was activated for 106 women at risk. In total, police made 287 arrests related to domestic abuse. Additionally, five victims were transported to shelter facilities using official police vehicles, and 21 victims were accompanied to forensic examiners or hospitals for further assistance.
SAFE SHELTERS FOR VICTIMS
The Hellenic Police has also ensured that each regional police directorate across the country operates at least one specially designed safe house. These facilities offer short-term protective accommodation to women and children affected by domestic violence, helping them find immediate refuge while longer-term support is arranged.
TACKLING YOUTH OFFENSES
In a parallel effort to address juvenile delinquency and violence among minors, the police continued soft-patrol operations led by trained male and female officers. These patrols focused on neighborhoods, squares, and gathering spots where incidents involving young people had previously occurred. Throughout the country, officers conducted 6,381 personal checks, detained 322 individuals for questioning, made 202 arrests, and recorded 248 legal violations.
CRIME PREVENTION MEASURES
Targeted actions to combat crime and enhance road safety were also in effect last week. From April 28 to May 4, law enforcement launched 401 specialized operations nationwide. These efforts included the inspection of 110,467 individuals, 4,328 detentions, and 2,014 arrests. Investigators successfully solved 219 theft and burglary cases, 31 fraud cases, 26 vehicle thefts, and 26 armed robberies. Authorities also pursued 167 weapons-related offenses and 292 drug-related cases.
TRAFFIC VIOLATIONS AND ROAD SAFETY
The traffic police conducted extensive patrols, particularly in large urban centers, to prevent reckless and antisocial driving behavior. These operations resulted in 131,969 vehicle inspections and the issuance of 33,093 traffic citations. The most common offenses included 11,845 illegal parking violations, 8,079 cases of speeding, and 1,644 instances of riding without a helmet. Other violations included failure to wear seat belts (1,254), driving without a license (1,010), expired vehicle inspections (729), driving under the influence (621), and mobile phone use while driving (338).
CONTINUED ENFORCEMENT AHEAD
The Hellenic Police emphasized that these targeted operations will continue with full intensity to ensure improved public safety, provide effective protection for victims of domestic abuse, and guarantee that no child feels unprotected or alone.
