Domestic violence cases reported to the police in Greece have nearly doubled compared to the same period last year, according to official data.

Police spokesperson Konstantina Dimoglidu shared insights with state broadcaster ERT, highlighting the alarming rise.

“This year, we have received almost twice the number of domestic violence complaints compared to last year,” Dimoglidu stated, attributing part of the increase to the effectiveness of the ‘panic button’ system, which allows victims to report incidents more easily.

She noted, “Some of the women who contacted us this year revealed they had been victims of violence in previous years. This indicates that women now feel more empowered to report such incidents compared to the past.”

The ‘panic button’ is a mobile application that enables victims to call the police directly at the press of a button, enhancing safety and response times.

The rise in reports underscores both the growing prevalence of domestic violence and the increasing willingness of victims to seek help, facilitated by improved support measures.
