Greece’s Transport Ministry has submitted a bill for public consultation proposing higher fines for fare evasion on public transport in Athens and Thessaloniki, aiming to reduce revenue losses and improve compliance.

Under the draft legislation, passengers traveling without a valid full-fare ticket would face a fine of 100 euros, up from 72 euros, while those entitled to a reduced fare would be fined 50 euros, compared with 30 euros currently.

The bill also provide a 50% reduction in the fine if the offender buys an unlimited travel card valid for at least 30 days within a deadline set by ministerial decision.

Public consultation on the bill is open until February 16.
