Greece pledges €1m aid for sudan crisis at berlin conference
The announcement was made by Greek Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis at the Third International Conference for Sudan held in Berlin, where global leaders and institutions gathered to coordinate aid and response efforts.
Gerapetritis said the situation in Sudan represents “an insult for the international community and human dignity,” stressing the urgent need for coordinated international action and sustained humanitarian funding.
He reaffirmed Greece’s support for Sudan’s unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity, and called on all parties to respect international humanitarian law amid the ongoing conflict.
The conference, co-organised by international and European partners, exceeded its initial funding target, raising €1.5 billion compared to the original €1 billion goal, according to organisers.
Greece’s contribution adds to broader European Union and United Nations assistance programmes already in place.
The Greek foreign minister also urged the creation of safe humanitarian corridors, the withdrawal of external actors from the conflict, and structured support for displaced populations, including their safe return to secure areas.
He highlighted the need to strengthen essential civilian infrastructure such as water, energy, healthcare and food systems, warning that attacks on such facilities may constitute war crimes.
Gerapetritis also called for increased support for neighbouring countries hosting Sudanese refugees, warning of wider regional instability affecting migration routes toward the Mediterranean.
He added that Sudan requires a civilian-led political process, urging the international community to create conditions for a sustainable political transition.
