Greece, Germany agree to strengthen strategic partnership
Greece and Germany have agreed to deepen bilateral ties through a new framework for strategic cooperation, Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis and his German counterpart Johann Wadephul said in a joint statement on Monday.
The two countries reaffirmed their commitment to shared values, including democracy, human rights and the rule of law, as well as support for the rules-based international order under the United Nations.
Amid geopolitical tensions linked to Russia’s war in Ukraine and instability in the Middle East, both sides pledged to step up cooperation to support peace and security in Europe and beyond.
The planned Partnership for Strategic Cooperation will focus on four key areas: foreign policy and migration, defense and security, economic cooperation and digital transformation, and collaboration in science, education and culture.
As members of the European Union and NATO, Greece and Germany said they aim to strengthen coordination and expand bilateral relations, with their foreign ministries overseeing implementation through regular consultations.
Four pillars of new partnership framework
Foreign policy, security, migration and EU affairs form the first pillar, focusing on closer coordination over geopolitical challenges, regional stability and migration management.
Strengthening defence and security cooperation
The second pillar covers defence, civil protection and hybrid threats, aiming to improve crisis response, logistics, procurement and law enforcement collaboration.
Boosting economic and digital cooperation
The third pillar targets trade, investment, infrastructure and digital transformation, with an emphasis on resilience and innovation in both economies.
Expanding science, education and cultural ties
The fourth pillar focuses on research, education, culture and youth exchanges to strengthen mutual understanding between societies.
Implementation through regular coordination
Both governments said their foreign ministries will monitor progress and ensure implementation through ongoing consultations with relevant institutions.
