Famellos slams Mitsotakis over refusal to recognize Palestinian state
SYRIZA President Sokratis Famellos has sharply criticized Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis for Greece's continued refusal to recognize the State of Palestine, as several key Western allies move forward with diplomatic recognition.
In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), Famellos referenced the recent decisions by the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia to formally recognize Palestinian statehood. He contrasted those developments with Mitsotakis' stance, saying:
“The UK, Canada, and Australia have recognized the State of Palestine—yet here in Greece, Mr. Mitsotakis doesn’t even acknowledge the genocide in Gaza.”
The SYRIZA leader argued that Greece, currently serving as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, has both the opportunity and responsibility to act decisively on the international stage.
“Greece must immediately take the initiative, with the first step being the official recognition of the State of Palestine,” Famellos stated.
Mounting international pressure
As more countries move toward recognizing Palestinian statehood in response to the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, pressure is growing on governments—including Greece—to take a clear stance. Famellos condemned what he described as Mitsotakis’ silence and inaction, saying it amounted to complicity amid a deepening tragedy.
“Silence is complicity. The destruction must end now,” he added.
The United Nations and numerous international human rights organizations have raised alarms over the situation in Gaza, citing evidence of widespread civilian suffering. Famellos’ remarks reflect increasing domestic and international calls for Greece to align itself with a growing global consensus.
