Empty shelves in Midilli (Lesbos) as port blockade disrupts supply chain

Supermarket shelves across the Greek island of Midilli are running empty as a prolonged port blockade has effectively frozen the island’s supply chain, leaving residents and businesses struggling to access essential goods.

The disruption stems from ongoing protests by livestock farmers, who have imposed restrictions at the island’s main port, halting the unloading of cargo from mainland Greece. As a result, the flow of food, consumer goods, and raw materials has come to a near standstill.

Panic Buying Empties Supermarkets
In Mytilene, the island’s capital, supermarkets have reported a complete depletion of stock following a surge in consumer demand over the weekend. Residents are now facing empty shelves, with basic necessities increasingly unavailable.

According to local reports, the continued suspension of cargo unloading from ferry services has created severe bottlenecks. Each passing day without new deliveries is pushing available supplies closer to exhaustion, while there remains no clear timeline for restoring normal distribution.

Businesses on the Brink
The crisis is not limited to retail. Restaurants, taverns, and catering services are also facing acute shortages, with many unable to meet daily operational needs. Industry professionals warn that if the situation persists, the viability of their businesses could be at serious risk within days.

The impact extends across the broader business ecosystem. Companies reliant on regular shipments from the mainland—including technical firms and retail stores—are increasingly unable to operate due to shortages of essential materials.

Jobs and Livelihoods at Risk
Business owners are now raising alarm over their ability to pay employees. One local entrepreneur, speaking anonymously, highlighted the gravity of the situation:

“I have 16 employees and cannot operate without supplies. How am I supposed to pay people who depend on their salaries when there is no income?”
Another supermarket owner described mounting pressure from customers:

“Shelves are empty, and people are asking for basic goods we simply don’t have. Complaints are increasing daily, but there’s nothing we can do. Without immediate resupply, we will be unable to serve the public.”
Wholesalers are also reporting cancellations, frozen contracts, and mounting financial losses, warning of broader economic consequences if the disruption continues.

Growing Economic Pressure
A representative from the supply sector summarized the situation:

“We supply dozens of businesses across the island, but right now we don’t have enough products for even half our clients. Orders are being canceled, contracts are on hold, and losses are growing every day.”
With the island’s commercial network under severe strain, the crisis is rapidly evolving from a logistical disruption into a wider economic and social emergency.
