Allegation of severe police brutality in Midilli
A serious incident of alleged police violence on the island of Lesvos (Midilli) has come to light, reported by the local outlet Lesvosnews.net.
According to a formal complaint filed by the victim’s brother, the events unfolded in the early hours of Sunday outside a local establishment in Midilli (Mytilene), where an altercation occurred between police officers and a visibly intoxicated man.
The man was arrested and taken to the Lesvos Police Directorate, where he was allegedly beaten severely by five officers, resulting in fractures to his arms and head. Despite these serious injuries, he was kept in detention and was not transferred to a hospital.
On Sunday morning, during a fast-track court procedure, the man collapsed at the Mytilene Courthouse after enduring hours in critical condition. Judicial authorities immediately ordered his transfer to the local hospital, declaring him unfit to stand trial.
He is currently hospitalized under police guard, with stitches to his head and a serious arm fracture that requires urgent surgery.
