The initiative is designed to ease pressure on household budgets by reducing the prices of up to 1,500 essential product codes, with the average agreed reduction expected to reach around 7%.

Up to 1,500 products included
The initial list currently contains approximately 1,100 product codes, according to the Ministry of Development. Officials expect another 200 to 300 products to be added by the end of August, bringing the total to around 1,500.

Around 60 suppliers have already joined the agreement, while another four to five companies are expected to participate, further expanding the range of products covered by the initiative.

The average price reduction of approximately 7% is expected to come from two sources. Supplier promotions are estimated to account for around 5 percentage points, while supermarket chains will provide an additional discount of between 1.5% and 2%.

Essential household products covered
The initiative covers a broad range of products considered essential for everyday household consumption.

The categories include:

  • Meat and meat products
  • Dairy products
  • Eggs
  • Pasta
  • Baby food
  • Coffee
  • Detergents
  • School supplies

The timing of the measure is particularly significant for household budgets, as it coincides with the start of the new school year and the additional expenses faced by families during this period.

Government seeks to strengthen household purchasing power
The Greek government says the initiative is intended to help contain prices and strengthen consumers’ purchasing power amid continued pressure on household spending.

With the program scheduled to begin on August 31 and remain in effect through at least the end of 2026, authorities are expected to monitor participation and the development of prices across the participating product categories.

If the planned additions are completed, consumers could have access to a list of around 1,500 discounted essential products across major supermarket chains.
