Nine-month military service introduced for new recruits

Greek conscripts called up with the 2026 third intake will be eligible to complete their mandatory military service in nine months if they enlist without receiving a deferment for studies.

The measure will be applied for the first time to recruits reporting from late August through early September 2026. It concerns those born between Jan. 1 and May 15, 2008.

The option for discharge after nine months of actual military service is provided under Article 246 of Law 5265/2026, Greece’s new legal framework governing military service.

Eligibility conditions

The nine-month service applies to conscripts completing their full primary military obligation who enlist with the initial call-up for their class and fulfill their obligation in full without receiving a deferment.

The measure has been introduced as an incentive for young people to complete their military obligations at an earlier age.

New rules for prospective students

The new legislation also introduces changes for recruits who plan to continue their education.

Those called up with the 2026 third intake who wish to attend a higher or university-level institution may request a deferment as prospective students.

The option is provided under Article 188 of Law 5265/2026.

Under the new rules, applicants no longer need to have already enrolled at an educational institution to receive the deferment.

Instead, they must submit the required documents demonstrating that they are eligible to participate in the relevant admission or enrollment process.
