European Parliament asked to lift Nikos Papandreou’s immunity
Greek authorities have asked the European Parliament to lift the immunity from prosecution of Socialist PASOK MEP Nikos Papandreou, European Parliament President Roberta Metsola said Monday.
Metsola did not disclose the reasons behind the request, saying it would first be examined by the European Parliament’s legal services.
Papandreou says he welcomes the process
Associates of Papandreou said the case concerns “an ordinary labor dispute” and stressed that the 69-year-old MEP has full confidence in the procedure.
They said Papandreou “welcomes the process and has full faith in its outcome.”
A parliamentary committee will examine the request and decide whether his immunity should be lifted.
Son of PASOK founder
Papandreou is the son of the late Andreas Papandreou, founder of PASOK and a former Greek prime minister, and the brother of former prime minister George Papandreou.
He has served as a member of the European Parliament since May 2023.
The immunity procedure does not itself determine whether an offense has been committed. It concerns whether the European Parliament should remove the legal protection attached to an MEP’s mandate so that national judicial proceedings can continue.
