European Parliament lifts Afroditi Latinopoulou’s immunity over Greek investigation
The European Parliament has approved the lifting of the parliamentary immunity of Greek MEP Afroditi Latinopoulou, allowing a judicial investigation in Greece concerning allegations over signatures submitted during the establishment of her political party, Voice of Logic (Foni Logikis), to proceed.
The decision was adopted by the European Parliament on September 15, 2026, following a request from Greek judicial authorities. The case had previously been examined by the Parliament’s Committee on Legal Affairs (JURI), which voted on the matter on September 7 before submitting its report to the plenary.
INVESTIGATION CONCERNS PARTY FOUNDING SIGNATURES
At the center of the Greek investigation are allegations that some of the signatures included in the founding declaration of Voice of Logic were false or otherwise invalid.
According to reporting on the case, the investigation concerns allegations potentially involving the preparation and use of forged documents and related electoral offenses. These allegations remain subject to judicial examination and do not constitute a finding of wrongdoing by Latinopoulou.
Greek judicial authorities transmitted the request for the waiver of immunity to the European Parliament, which opened the formal procedure under reference 2026/2009(IMM).
WHAT THE IMMUNITY DECISION MEANS
The lifting of parliamentary immunity removes the procedural protection that had prevented the Greek judicial authorities from continuing the case against Latinopoulou without that parliamentary obstacle.
It does not constitute a criminal conviction or establish that the allegations against her are true. The European Parliament's decision concerns the question of parliamentary immunity rather than the merits of the underlying allegations.
Latinopoulou has previously rejected the allegations and said she was not opposed to the lifting of her immunity, according to Greek media reports, allowing the Greek authorities to examine the case.
The European Parliament's official procedure file records the case as completed following the Parliament's decision on September 15.
CASE NOW CONTINUES IN GREECE
With the immunity issue resolved at the European level, the investigation can proceed before the competent Greek authorities.
The allegations concerning the authenticity of the signatures will ultimately have to be assessed through the Greek judicial process. The European Parliament's decision does not determine whether the signatures were forged or whether Latinopoulou bears criminal responsibility.
Latinopoulou remains a member of the European Parliament and leader of Voice of Logic. The immunity decision concerns the continuation of the judicial process and does not itself determine its outcome.
