Von der Leyen faces renewed no-confidence motion in European Parliament
European Parliament President Roberta Metsola has informed political group leaders of the initiative, according to sources cited by dpa. The debate and vote are expected to take place during next week’s plenary session in Strasbourg.
The motion has been submitted by the far-right group Patriots for Europe, which has criticised von der Leyen primarily over the EU’s trade agreement with the Mercosur countries — Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay.
It is the fourth no-confidence motion against von der Leyen and her Commission within the past six months. The Patriots for Europe group includes lawmakers from France’s National Rally, led by Marine Le Pen, and the party of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban.
Under European Parliament rules, a no-confidence motion requires the backing of at least 10% of MEPs to be debated and put to a vote.
