Europe swelters under second major summer heatwave

Europe is facing its second major heatwave of the summer, with temperatures soaring well above seasonal averages across several countries, prompting health warnings and sending residents and tourists in search of relief.

In eastern Slovakia, people cooled off in the Tisza River near the village of Male Trakany as temperatures continued to climb. Across the region, authorities have urged the public to stay hydrated and avoid prolonged exposure to the sun.

In Poland, temperatures exceeded 35 degrees Celsius in some areas, leading the Polish Institute of Meteorology and Water Management to issue orange heat warnings, the second-highest level on its three-tier alert scale. Cities including Krakow deployed water trucks and public cooling stations, where residents refilled water bottles and sought respite under water curtains.

Further south, Serbia also experienced intense heat, with residents gathering near public fountains and seeking shade in parks across the capital, Belgrade.

Italy has been among the hardest-hit countries, enduring its fourth heatwave of the season. The latest spell of extreme weather, driven by an African anticyclone, is expected to push temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius in several regions.

In Rome, tourists sought relief at public fountains in Piazza del Popolo as the country's Health Ministry placed 11 cities under its highest heat alert, warning that the number could increase if conditions persist. In Naples, residents and visitors used umbrellas to shield themselves from the intense sunshine.

Meteorologists say the prolonged period of extreme heat has raised concerns about public health, particularly for older adults, young children, and people with underlying medical conditions. Authorities across affected countries continue to advise people to remain indoors during the hottest hours of the day, drink plenty of water, and use available cooling facilities.

The heatwave is expected to continue in parts of Europe over the coming days, with officials monitoring conditions and issuing further advisories as necessary.
