Bread prices in Greece could soon increase as local bakers warn that soaring energy costs and geopolitical tensions in the Middle East are placing severe pressure on small bakery businesses across the country.

The Athens Bakers’ Guild of Attica and Surrounding Areas has issued an urgent warning, saying that many neighborhood bakeries are struggling to survive due to rising operating expenses and declining consumer spending.

Energy Prices Driving Costs Higher
According to the guild, international energy prices surged following the escalation of conflict in the Middle East and the war involving Iran, which intensified on February 28. The spike has added new pressure to an industry already strained by the economic fallout from the Ukraine war and the broader energy crisis in Europe.

Local bakeries—many of them small family-run businesses—have absorbed much of the rising costs in recent years, but industry representatives say the situation is now becoming unsustainable.

Bakeries Facing Multiple Pressures
The sector is currently dealing with several major challenges:

  • Rising operational costs: Electricity and fuel prices have significantly increased the cost of running bakery ovens and production equipment.
  • Lower revenues: Households’ reduced purchasing power has led to weaker consumer demand.
Risk of closures: Many small bakeries struggle to meet tax and social security obligations, raising fears of widespread shutdowns.
  • Industry representatives warn that without intervention, many neighborhood bakeries could close, fundamentally changing the structure of the Greek bread market.

Bread Considered a Basic Necessity
The guild emphasized that bread is a staple food, noting that previous price increases did not fully reflect the real cost of production.

Bakers argue that maintaining traditional bakeries is essential not only for the economy but also for community life and social cohesion, particularly in urban neighborhoods.

  • Bakers Call for Government Intervention
To prevent further price hikes and possible closures, the guild has called on the government to introduce several urgent measures:
  • Eliminate VAT on bread to keep it affordable for consumers
  • Reduce energy costs through special electricity tariffs for artisanal bakeries
  • Provide tax relief for small businesses
  • Strengthen market controls to prevent speculation and unfair pricing in raw materials

Without immediate state support, bakers warn that fresh bread could gradually become a “luxury item”, while supermarket shelves may increasingly be filled with mass-produced frozen bread products.
