A prolonged episode of African dust continues to affect Greece, with hazy skies, elevated particulate levels and strong winds expected to persist until Friday, according to meteorologist Olga Papavgiouli.

The phenomenon, described as weak to moderate in intensity and typical for the season, is impacting much of the country, particularly eastern, southern and parts of western regions. Air quality remains degraded, with concentrations in Piraeus reaching up to 70 micrograms per cubic meter, above the recommended threshold of 50.

Meteorologists said the highest dust concentrations are currently found in the upper atmosphere, limiting ground-level impact compared to previous events. Conditions are somewhat improved in Thrace and Eastern Macedonia, where strong northeasterly winds are helping to disperse pollutants.

Localised showers are expected mainly in mountainous areas of Macedonia, Epirus, Thessaly, Central Greece and the Peloponnese, with possible “mud rain” due to suspended dust particles.

Winds are forecast to intensify significantly, especially over the Aegean Sea, reaching up to 8 Beaufort and locally 9 Beaufort in the Karystos Strait by Friday. Strong winds are also expected in eastern Attica.

Temperatures remain above seasonal norms, reaching up to 27°C in western Greece and around 22–23°C in most other regions.

In Athens, intermittent cloud cover and a slight chance of light rain are forecast, while Thessaloniki will see cloudy intervals with brief showers in surrounding mountainous areas.

FRIDAY

Friday is expected to mark a transition day, as strong northerly winds gradually push the dust southwards, with possible storms in Crete and the Dodecanese.

By the weekend, the atmosphere is expected to clear significantly, with improved air quality and more stable, spring-like conditions, although localised afternoon showers may persist in mountainous inland areas. Winds will remain strong before gradually easing early next week.
