Heatwave ends in Greece as temperatures drop sharply
The prolonged heatwave affecting Greece is coming to an end, with temperatures expected to drop significantly across the country.
After reaching 43.5 degrees Celsius in parts of central Greece, temperatures will fall to around 26-28 degrees in some areas on Friday, while most regions will see highs between 30 and 32 degrees.
Storms expected on Friday
A weather system will bring strong thunderstorms, local storms and sudden wind gusts from Friday afternoon.
The main affected areas are expected to be Thessaly, Macedonia, the Sporades and Evia, while Attica could also experience storms late in the day. Conditions will gradually improve from Saturday as the weather system moves toward the Aegean.
Fire risk remains high
Despite the cooler weather, strong northern winds will keep the risk of wildfires elevated.
Orange alerts remain in place for parts of southern Evia, Attica and Rhodes, with winds reaching up to 6 Beaufort and locally 7 Beaufort in the Dodecanese.
The drop in temperature will also bring lower humidity and reduced levels of African dust, improving conditions across the country.
Forecasters expect mostly clear summer weather to return from Sunday, with temperatures rising slightly but no indication of a new heatwave.
